AHMEDABAD: US-based Ford Foundation today announced its International Fellowship Programme (IFP) 2009 for India offering opportunities for quality higher education to individuals at the grassroot level.

Candidates from across ten states of India will be awarded the fellowship for Masters and PhD studies, covering all expenses from pre-academic training before enrolling in an international university to accomodation and logistics support for the entire duration of the programme.

40 candidates will be chosen from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand this year.

“There is a need for funding people who would normally have no access to quality higher education. IFP’s aim is to make long-term investment in building capacities of these individuals,” Ford Foundation Director for IFP Vivek Mansukhani told reporters here.

“The mission of this programme is to create opportunities for social and economic change through network of people at the grassroot level,” he added.

The IFP, which began in 2001, supports individuals in 22 countries and will be spending USD 355 million under the programme which ends in 2010.

Till September 2008, 240 individuals from India have been selected, including 15 from Gujarat, for the fellowship programme. Of these, 160 candidates have completed their studies, while a number of them are still pursuing their higher studies abroad, Mansukhani said.

NEW DELHI: To meet a growing labour-supply gap in countries of the European Union, the government has initiated a television advertisement campaign in Punjab and Kerala — two states with the maximum rate of migration.

The idea of the television advertisement was mooted under the India-EU migration programme being pursued jointly by the International Organisation for Migration and the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA).

The European Union had earlier launched an Asia-EU migration programme to compensate for a labour gap in the EU economy by inviting workers from South Asian countries.

The migration programme is believed to be a big driver for pushing ahead ongoing infrastructure development programme in several EU countries.

The TV ad features a well-off expat settled in Europe elucidating on the beauty of the culture, tradition and nature of the place to an unassuming youth.
In his excitement the youth exclaims “Oh! even I will be in Europe. The travel agent is sending my visa soon.”

To which the well-off European settler puts on a concerned expression and enquires if the youth has obtained a work visa. “Huh…what is that!” exclaims the youth. The expat then explained on the benefits of migrating after acquiring a work visa for Europe.

Produced at a cost of Rs 18 lakh under a sponsorship by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the advertisement would be shortly beamed on three Punjabi news and music channels as well as three most popular news channels in Kerala.
